The Ultimate Summer BBQ

BBQ

With the hot weather arriving as we speak, it’s time to dust off your BBQ and get grilling! A barbeque is the ideal way to socialise outside with friends and family, enjoy the light nights and tasty food.

So what do you need to create the ultimate summer BBQ?

A barbeque (duh!)
Get the basics right by getting yourself one of the latest barbeques on the market - some of which fold down for easy storage or have all the latest gadgets for keeping food warm, frying onions, and storing tools. You’ll need to consider whether you’ll go for a traditional charcoal BBQ for that distinctive char-grilled taste, or go for a fast convenient gas lit BBQ.

BBQ tools
Flip burgers, turn sausages and grill skewers of chicken and veg with a variety of handy tools. No doubt there are some very handy gadgets (and some very useless but quite fun!) on the market - in a quick search I’ve spotted a belt bottle opener, a branding iron to brand your burgers with your name, and a digital thermometer to make sure your food is cooked correctly. Is there anything you’ve seen out there which we should add to this list?

Outdoor seating
If you’re planning on eating outside, you’ll need to invest in some outdoor furniture or seating. Go for a traditional table & chairs or bistro set for easy eating, or simply a picnic blanket for a solution that is low cost and easily stored. For a bit of fun, go for an outdoor bean bag which is comfortable and colourful.

Food
Stock up and freeze your BBQ food well in advance - you know the minute the sun starts to shine the supermarkets will run out on the hot days! You can get tasty burgers stuffed with melted cheese, or go for premium butchers sausages flavoured with sun-dried tomatoes or caramelised onion. For family favourites, stock up on coleslaw and potato salad.

Fuel
Buy big bags of charcoal at your local garage or supermarket and stock up on firelighters and matches. Alternatively make sure your gas canister is full and ready to light.

Once you’ve got all these key ingredients you’re ready to go! Happy grilling!

Garden makeover

With the warmer weather definitely on the way, it’s time to have a look at your garden and outdoor space.

Forget the flowers and the plants - it’s spring time - let Mother Nature do that side of things!

What you’ll need to concentrate on are the finishing touches to make your garden really part of the home. Think of special extras like hurricane lanterns, outdoor fairy lights and solar charged lighting to bring that extra magic to the garden and create a homely atmosphere outside.

Garden furniture is always one to consider - can you make do with that picnic bench you’ve had for years? Try something new:

  • Introduce a bit of a retro feel with deckchairs in colourful fabrics making a comeback
  • Create a vintage feel with pretty parasols and bunting
  • Brighten up your patio or decking with some outdoor bean bags
  • Your friends will be jealous of a super cool hammock

Entice Mother Nature by installing some bird feeders and tables - you can get some really trendy ones now from the likes of John Lewis or Habitat. Forget the old wooden ones and think transparent plastic or even glass, pagoda styles, thatched huts, or Nordic metal designs.

Finally did you know the sales of seeds for vegetables are now the highest since World War II? Families have started looking to grow their own - why not try planting some easy to grow potatoes, carrots or even herbs? You’ll be surprised at what you can do!

Fresh colours back in stock

Now the warmer weather is finally here, you’ll be looking to brighten up your home with fresh spring colours and get rid of the wintery browns, greys and blacks.

Our lovely cream faux leather bean bags are popular options for the home all year round. Soft and supple and a warm cream colour, this will go perfectly with the pastel colours that are hot right now. Cream and duck egg blue for example is fresh and inviting, while cream and baby pink or nude colours are all on the interior fashion trends for Spring/Summer this year.

‘Must do’ things this Spring

Daffodil

My top tips for things to do this spring!

1) Be a big kid & go on an Easter Egg hunt
Enjoy that long-lost feeling of pure joy discovering an Easter Egg where you least expected it.

2) Eat too many Easter Eggs
If you’ve given up chocolate for Lent, you can finally let yourself go and eat as many eggs as you like!

3) Spring clean
Give your house a good top-to-bottom wash, scrub, and polish to make it gleam (at least for a while anyway!)

4) Freshen up
Introduce a low cost home interior item to freshen up a room - a new mirror, vase, plant (or how about a beanbag?)

5) Eat your lunch outside
If you’re sick of eating at your desk, wait for a warmer day, put your coat on and eat your sandwich outside - the fresh air will wake you up.

6) Take a walk
When was the last time you took a leisurely stroll through your local park?

7) Buy some daffodils
Daffodils really brighten up a room, and only cost about £1 for a bunch - ideal for bringing a little bit of spring into your home.

8 ) Have a barbeque
If you’re feeling really ambitious, have your first barbeque of the year. Bring out some lounging outdoor bean bags into the garden and snuggle up with a blanket to chill out while your burgers are cooking!
